Why is nutrition essential as we age?
The importance of nutrition for the aging population cannot be overstated, as it plays a vital role in enhancing quality of life, promoting health, and prolonging independence. As individuals age, their nutritional needs change due to factors such as a slower metabolism, changes in taste and appetite, and the body's decreased ability to absorb certain nutrients such as vitamin D and calcium.
Adequate nutrition helps to prevent and manage age-related conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. A well-balanced diet rich in essential nutrients supports cognitive function, maintains muscle mass and strength, and boosts the immune system, thereby reducing the risk of infections, illnesses. Hydration and balanced dietary choices can improve energy levels, promote better sleep patterns, improve wound healing and contribute to emotional well-being.
Without adequate nutrition to meet the body’s needs, there is a higher risk of developing malnutrition, experiencing functional decline (including inability to grocery shop for and prepare own meals) and likely an increase in hospital admissions or longer hospital stays. Poor nutrition or under nutrition is one of the major reasons why older people become frail and lose their independence.
